FAQs

You Have Questions.
We Have Clear Answers.

No. The groundwater already exists around your foundation. A professionally installed egress system gives that water a controlled path away from your basement. Every JustEgress installation includes drainage integration tied directly into the foundation drainage system — this is not an optional upgrade. Improperly drained wells are one of the most common reasons homeowners experience pooling water, freeze-thaw damage, foundation deterioration, and leaks around basement windows.

Under New York State Residential Building Code, habitable space includes finished areas where people live, sleep, work, or regularly spend time. This may include:

  • Basement bedrooms
  • Home offices
  • Playrooms
  • Teen hangout spaces
  • In-law suites
  • Finished recreational spaces

Laundry rooms, utility rooms, and storage spaces are generally not considered habitable space.

New York State Residential Building Code Section R310 states: “Basements, habitable attics, and every sleeping room shall have not less than one operable emergency escape and rescue opening.” Basement bedrooms require their own code-compliant egress opening. Requirements generally include:

  • Minimum 5.7 square feet clear opening
  • Minimum 20-inch net clear width
  • Window sill no higher than 44 inches from finished floor
  • Operable without tools
  • In-law suites
  • Properly drained window well system

Specific requirements may vary by municipality.

Yes. Under New York State Residential Building Code Section R310, every sleeping room requires its own operable emergency escape and rescue opening.

Most unfinished basement installations are completed in a single day. Finished basement projects generally follow a four-day process:

  • Day 1 — Interior containment and wall exposure
  • Day 2 — Excavation, cutting, drainage, and installation
  • Day 3 — Framing, insulation, and drywall work
  • Day 4 — Finish trim, drywall finishing, and final cleanup

Yes. JustEgress handles permit coordination and inspection scheduling as part of the installation process.

Yes. We regularly install egress systems in:

  • Poured concrete foundations
  • Block foundations
  • Superior Walls
  • Field stone and rubble foundations
  • ICF foundations

Western New York has some of the most challenging foundation and soil conditions in the country, and we have been working in those conditions since 2008.

We use professional Alturna Mats and precision-sized excavation equipment to minimize impact to lawns and landscaping. We do not use plywood sheets as ground protection. Complete cleanup is part of every project.

Yes. Many homeowners begin with a guided photo estimate or secure LiveSwitch virtual consultation. Every proposal includes a personalized Loom video review where Frank walks through the site conditions, installation plan, and recommended system.
